Our top 6 time-saving tips

Posted by Andrew Mead

When you run your own business, it can sometimes feel like anything is possible. You are, for all intents and purposes, the master of your own destiny. There is, however, one thing you will never be able to do: freeze time.

Lose money as a business, and as hard as it may be, you can usually make it back. Lose time, well that is gone forever. Until the day someone invents a real life Bernard’s Watch, you’ll have to make do with these time-saving tips…

Get in early, don’t stay late.

Our bodies are naturally more alert in the morning – although we may not always feel like it – so set the alarm an hour early and get on with your day. Equally, our bodies tend to wind down in the late afternoon/early evening, so staying late becomes counterproductive.

Know when to say no.

Although sometimes it is not easy; for the sake of productivity, it pays to be able to say no. If a colleague asks a favour, or if you are doing a task which really could be delegated, it’s ok to be honest and say you simply don’t have the time to do it. Keep in mind that your roles and responsibilities come first – otherwise that to-do list won’t be getting smaller anytime soon!

Push yourself.

Just because you have one week to complete a project, doesn’t mean that’s how long it needs to take. If you set yourself a much shorter deadline of a couple of days, you will have to work more strategically in order to meet it. Set yourself a longer deadline and all you are really doing is allowing time for procrastination.

Eat later.

As mentioned earlier, people find it easier to focus in the early hours of the day. To make the most of this time, take your lunch break later in the afternoon. Keep hunger at bay with some healthy snacks, and take a break when you begin to crash, not just when you’re just finding your momentum.

Embrace technology.

There are so many productivity and time management apps available nowadays that none of us has any excuse not to at least try to get things in order. Apps such as Wunderlist, Trello, Todoist, Evernote and the like are all available for mere pence (some are free), and will have you wondering how you ever lived without them.
