5 Ridiculous Alternatives To GPS Vehicle Tracking

Posted by Arpana Nair

Sure, GPS vehicle tracking offers businesses a wide array of money and timesaving features, but surely there are other ways to keep track of your work vehicles, right? Here's a list of alternative methods to use at your own risk.

RUNNING ALONGSIDE YOUR VEHICLES

Not only can you keep a close eye on exactly what your drivers are up to, this technique will help you stay fit! Plus you have the option of being covert by staying in your driver's blind spot as you run. If you've got multiple vehicles you may want to invest in a racing bike or at least better running shoes.

CALLING YOUR DRIVERS EVERY FIVE SECONDS TO CHECK ON THEIR LOCATION

Think how close you and your drivers will become with all that phone time! Sure, most conversations will be fairly short:

You: "Where are you now?"

Employee: "Just got on the M4."

You: "OK, thanks."

Employee: "Please stop calling."

But sometimes it's about quantity, not quality. Note: Before attempting this, make sure to up your mobile phone plan to a higher minutes package.

HACKING INTO the governments satellites

You will have 24/7 access to live satellite data by tapping into a direct satellite feed with the help of a rogue hacker. Then just zoom into your local area and look for your vehicles. It's even easier if you paint a large red dot on top of each vehicle's roof.

HAVING DRIVERS DROP BREADCRUMBS

Who needs some sophisticated route replay tool when you have bread? Just hand your drivers a few unique loaves (white, rye, pumpernickel, etc.) before they leave in the morning and tell them to drop crumbs out the window every few Kilometres. Later, you can just pick a driver by bread type and follow their path to see where they were. Note: This technique works best in areas with low bird populations and little wind.

HIRING A PRIVATE DETECTIVE

Why follow your drivers around when you can have someone else do it? Find a local investigator in the Yellow Pages and have him keep an eye on your drivers. You'll probably find out even more about your employees than you ever wanted to know.

HONORABLE MENTION: TRACK THEIR MOBILE PHONES

One common way to "track" drivers is by tracking their mobile phones. Now, granted they have to keep their phones with them AND the phone has to be on AND there has to be reception in the area, but still there's always a good chance that you'll have some idea of where your people were at some point in time, probably.
